I had preeclampsia with my daughter almost 2 years ago, so this week's news is hitting close to home.
The WHO just released its global roadmap for preeclampsia, a 10-year blueprint for research, drug development, and care. Preeclampsia accounted for roughly 16% of maternal deaths worldwide in 2023, about 42,000 women, and there is still no approved drug to treat it.
For decades, the field was overlooked: the biology was poorly understood, pregnant women were excluded from trials, and Women's Health rarely got the investment it deserved.
That's finally changing. The Preeclampsia Foundation counts 200+ candidates in exploration. Biotechs like Comanche Biopharma, DiaMedica, Avilar, and ProFound are advancing new approaches, and big pharma is starting to build capabilities here too.
It's a part of a bigger shift across the life sciences landscape to address Women's Health, and it's long overdue.
If you or someone you love has been through preeclampsia or other underserved women's health conditions, I'd love to hear what you think the field needs most.
